Phytosphingosine
INCI: Phytosphingosine | Function: Antimicrobial, Barrier, Anti-inflammatory | Type: Soothing
What Is Phytosphingosine? Phytosphingosine is a long-chain sphingoid base that serves as the backbone for all ceramides in the skin. It is naturally present in the stratum corneum where it provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity (against bacteria, fungi, and viruses) while simultaneously supporting barrier repair. As a precursor to ceramide synthesis, it is one of the few ingredients that both treats acne (antimicrobial) and repairs barrier simultaneously — ideal for acne-prone skin with compromised barrier.
Key Skin Benefits + Broad-spectrum antimicrobial — bacteria, fungi, viruses + Ceramide precursor — supports natural barrier synthesis + Anti-inflammatory — reduces skin redness and irritation + Treats acne while repairing barrier (unique dual-action) + Naturally present in healthy skin — excellent tolerability
Pros + + Unique dual-action — antimicrobial + barrier repair + + Ceramide precursor — supports natural skin lipids + + Broad antimicrobial — P. acnes, S. aureus, fungi + + Naturally found in skin — biomimetic + + Ideal for acne-prone sensitive skin
Cons − − Can be irritating at very high concentrations − − Less effective as standalone acne treatment − − Expensive as purified ingredient − − Limited consumer awareness
