Phytosphingosine

INCI: Phytosphingosine | Function: Antimicrobial, Barrier, Anti-inflammatory | Type: Soothing

What Is Phytosphingosine?

Phytosphingosine is a long-chain sphingoid base that serves as the backbone for all ceramides in the skin. It is naturally present in the stratum corneum where it provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity (against bacteria, fungi, and viruses) while simultaneously supporting barrier repair. As a precursor to ceramide synthesis, it is one of the few ingredients that both treats acne (antimicrobial) and repairs barrier simultaneously — ideal for acne-prone skin with compromised barrier.
